What is AEDP (Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy)?

AEDP (Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy) is a trauma-informed, emotion-focused, and attachment oriented approach to therapy that aims to foster positive change through deep processing of emotionssurrounding traumatic, stressful or overwhelming life events that have impacted how we related to ourselves, others and the world around us.

Rather than a neutral or distant stance, the therapist is actively engaged, emotionally present, and attuned to you. This means you’re not left alone to navigate difficult emotions. There’s a sense of being accompanied; someone noticing you, responding to you, and helping you stay grounded as things come up.

Instead of moving quickly past your experience or staying only in thoughts and explanations, we gently turn toward what’s happening in the present moment:

What are you feeling right now?
Where do you feel that in your body?
What happens as you stay with it, just a little bit longer?

It’s about helping you build the capacity to be with your emotions in a way that feels manageable and supported.

Many painful experiences become overwhelming not just because of what happened, but because you had to go through them alone. In therapy, we work to undo aloneness. This means, you feel the sadness, anger, fear, and someone is right there with you. Attuned. Steady. Not trying to fix or rush you, but helping you stay connected and safe as the feeling moves through.

Over time, emotions that may have been pushed down, avoided, or frozen start to move. When this happens, people often notice a shift. What once felt overwhelming begins to soften or resolve. Underneath, there is often a sense of relief, clarity, self-compassion, and strength.

When you notice a sense of relief, a deep breath, a feeling of “that makes sense,” or a moment of pride or compassion toward yourself, we don’t skip over it. We stay with it. We help your system take it in. These moments are important because they help your brain and body begin to recognize something new: I’m okay. I can handle this. I’m not alone.

Pacing is an essential part of the process. We’re constantly tracking your nervous system together; noticing when something feels activating, when to slow down, when to pause, and when it feels okay to go a little deeper. You’re never pushed beyond what feels manageable. The goal isn’t to force feelings, but to create the conditions where it can happen naturally.

As sessions progress, you may begin to find yourself feeling more connected to your emotions rather than overwhelmed by them. Less stuck in states of anxiety, shame and guilt. More able to set boundaries. More compassionate toward yourself. More present in your relationships. Less stuck in patterns that once felt automatic and unsustainable.

Who is AEDP for?

AEDP can effectively treat a wide variety of mental health concerns including PTSD and trauma-related symptoms, depression, anxiety, interpersonal challenges, shame and self-criticism, difficulties with emotion regulation and negative thought patterns.

You may be a good fit for AEDP if you have been to more traditional insight-based talk therapy and are feeling stuck in your healing journey. It’s often helpful for people who have a strong sense of insight but are still struggling to make meaningful change, especially in patterns related to trauma, relationships, self-criticism, or emotional regulation.
